Oslo S is Norways most important public transport hub. The central station is the heart of the capital – and while more and more people travel collectively, there are increasing demands on Oslo’s most central area. A new bus terminal over the platform area can play an important role in shaping the future of the area.

All the platforms at the train station get new exits to a spacious and continuous circulation floor that forms a unifying roof over the tracks. That floor offers plenty of space for both travelers and all thinkable service features. This area connects both buses and trains closer to other public transport services, and closer to the station and the city around.

Plan option 1 [to the right ] is designed to limit traffic disturbances for rail traffic during construction. A robust hub will be built for the most seamless travel experiences, surrounded by attractive city spaces.

Plan option 2 [to the left ] is designed to exploit the enormous potential that follows Oslo’s most central location. In this option there is a large building volume above the bus terminal. This holds commercial areas that contribute to the financing. To the east, this volume, along with outgoing features in Stasjonstorget, creates an active facade towards a new public streetscape along the current Nylandsveien.

The entire project is organized around a central main room

The entire project is organized around a central main room, which extends across the track area, and makes it easy to orient.

Over the station square is the new bus terminal. Around a central passenger island in the middle is a large and sheltered area for the buses. Over time, the area can be adapted to future solutions for street-based public transport, such as self-propelled buses.

The proposal gives Oslo S a new facade towards Bjørvika, and will help create new attractive urban spaces and streets. Today’s back alleys are reshaped to be main facades, and new connections break down the existing barrier effect of the track area.

Moving today’s bus terminal from Schweigaardsgate, makes it possible to integrate large parts of the today subdivided urban fabric on the eastern edge of the city center. This will bring the areas Vaterland and Greenland closer to the fjord, and facilitates the development of new, attractive city spaces in the heart of the city.
