Old and new, hand in hand – a Methodist church and The Bethany Foundation get a new headquarters with offices and apartments.
Almost no type of architecture is more challenging than making old and new buildings work together. Few, if any, projects are as beautiful as those where historic houses and new structures are stitched together successfully.
With our project Betanien on St.Hanshaugen in Oslo, Mad arkitekter created a little architectural narrative like this, where bridges are built in between centuries through elegant, practical and finely tuned solutions.
A MOTIF THAT COULD NOT BE DISTURBED
The existing house stands with its front and main facade towards the Vår Frelser Gravlund Cemetery at the bottom of hilly St. Hanshaugen in Oslo, with a dignified character and substantial qualities that cannot be tampered with. While working on the project it was crucial to cultivate this motif and prevent it from being interrupted.
At the same time, a six storey building was built at the rear, clad in light sheet coverings. The new structure was given a clear cut and disciplined expression, with the large volume standing independently as a clear innovation – a necessary reverence and distance to the existing volume.
But how do we create correlation and unity?
Glass in a nexus
The solution was to create an atrium and glass annex that in a subtle and docile manner binds both the new and the old building together.
This move does not only give a visual motif, but also create an interior space with a set of qualities that none of the other two buildings have.
The programme is a mix of office and residential spaces, and with the atrium both functions get a meeting space with its own distinctive character. This creates the opportunity for people living and working in the same space get a place to meet and interact.
Architecture and faith
Designing a location for a religious community is not like designing a new grocery store. A task such as this requires a different kind of respect and a clear understanding of what walls and ceilings can and should symbolize.
With Betanien we designed a house where calm dignity and balanced approach to the existence is found in both the design of the building elements and in dealing with practical functions.
This is a building bringing the user a little closer to the very essence of their work and values.
